Birds/Wildlife
Due to the fact that the Elan Estate covers approx. 70 square miles and varies in terrain from dense woodland to open hillside and bracken covered slopes a wide range of birds can be observed. The Lodge offers guests an idyllic opportunity to see many species (many from the breakfast table) including the Red Kite, Sparrow Hawk, Tree Creeper, Siskin, Nuthatch, BlueTit, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Grey / Pied Wagtails, Blackcap, House Martin, Buzzard, Dippers, Goosanders and the Greater Spotted Woodpeckers many of which come daily for a meal on the bird table & feeders.
There are many areas in addition to the Elan Estate for bird and wildlife watching in particular the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust's 'Gilfach Nature Reserve', the Wye Valley Trails, and of course the well known Gigrin Farm Red Kite Feeding Centre where the Red Kites, Buzzards and Ravens and other carrion feeders can be seen feeding daily at, 2pm winter & 3pm summer, just under two miles from the Lodge (see our links page). The Red Kite is a great success story going from near extinction to what now is a relatively common sight in the area indeed it has almost become the symbol for the Mid-Wales region.
Although the region is best known for its Red Kites, due to the lack of chemical usage in the area the wildlife abounds. In this locality there are frequent sightings of many of the rarer animals within Wales. Badgers, Hedgehogs, Frogs are frequently seen but if you are lucky there are Polecats, various species of bats and the occasional sight of an otter or two. Butterflies and insects abound here and although spectacular are often overlooked. The rangers from the nearby Elan Valley Visitor Centre arrange 'Minibeast Safari's' throughout the year.
